The papers of physicist Robert WilliamYoung include documentation of his early career in musical acoustics, his work on underwater sound related to submarine warfare for the University of California Division of War Research from 1942-1945 and for the Naval Electronics Laboratory and Marine Physical Laboratory from 1945-1967, his work with R.S. Gales as a consultant on acoustics in San Diego, and his professional activities and publications. The collection includes documentation of UCDWR including Young's wartime photo album. The correspondence files include extensive correspondence with acoustics scientists around the world and documentation of Young's work on national and international efforts to establish acoustics standards for measuring noise including aircraft noise. Consulting files include material documenting emerging city and state noise standards in San Diego and California, files on Lindbergh Field and military air stations in San Diego, files on acoustics of buildings including schools, civic and business buildings, religious institutions, and major facilities including the new University of California campus in San Diego. These files include material documenting sonic booms and controversies including MCAS Miramar helicopter noise over Del Mar in 1995. The files include correspondence with San Diego architects including Frank Hope and Lloyd Ruocco.
